The bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt (BCPS): the important role of the second stage of the Fontan operation for the surgical treatment of the univentricular heart

The BCPS has played an important role in the accomplishment of excellent outcomes of Fontan operation in current practice and extensively employed as an important modality in the staged Fontan operation for the univentricular heart. However, it remains controversial as to the optimal age at surgery and the effects of the antegrade flow to be left behind. In the conference, our experiences of BCPS will be presented including special case reports as well as effects of BCPS on the clinical outcomes. Furthermore, its unique nature to the cardiac performance will be discussed.
