Birth defects: Prospects of Prenatal Diagnosis and Genetic Counseling

With the increased availability of specialised genetic tests in different medical disciplines, the genetic counseling has become important. The genetic basis of more and more birth defects are being identified and more awareness is needed in the general physicians and general public regarding the availability and limitations of the tests. Also, in selected families with significant morbidity and mortality due to these genetic disorders, prenatal diagnosis can be offered to reduce the public health burden for some severe disorders.
